bangalore -Chicago artist run spaces

April and May 2010,

it is late to update but still better than nothing.

purchased a 18gears cycle and it is fantastic, thou it gave me too much problem many times but still. bangalore roads are good to practice for a good cycle trip in swiz. it is blady hilly.

i dont know how people update their blog daily --it is a full time job. write and also download the images --uff somebody should pay me for this job.

Bangalore art scene is vibrant--people need to travel to feel it.
i will just update the images to give an idea.

Sept 2010

i went to Chicago last month and found like Bangalore this city too has artists run spaces.  with few differences:
In Bangalore artist run spaces are more like a community spaces.  Samuha which worked like a chit fund (24 artist contributed money), rest are normally funded by some organizations. In Chicago normally it is self funded. the artist hires a space where they normally have their own studios and also invite other artist to show their work in their spaces. like samuha i found one space in Chicago contributions came from artists. Samuha ran only for a year it ended last month. this was a project by suresh kumar, he became a handy man for artist. 24 artist contributed 2,000rs every month. every artist got in exchange 17days to do anything in that space. this space was in the center of town. next to shivaji theatre, front of Ravindra kalashetra, close to town hall and behind the city market and above a theater called ADA rangamandira.

here i too exhibited without paying anything. the artist could also invite other artist to work on his 17days, and that's what happened Archana Devi’s Chamber was invited by an artist called Shivu kumar.

most of the artist run spaces in Bangalore are in center of the city. either it is a hired spaces or their owned spaces. Comparing to Chicago, Bangalore spaces and projects looks more sophisticated and crowded. In Geneva the artists squatted govt buildings to make studios and spaces to exhibit their works.
in this article i am only showing Bangalore and Chicago spaces. Geneva article will be coming soon.

  1. Hi Archana! My name is Shreya Sethi and I recently became a follower or your blog. I came across your blog while exploring google searches with the words "Art Chicago and Bangalore." I am actually an art student studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and am visiting Bangalore at the end of the month. I was hoping to explore the Bangalore art scene and perhaps even look for some longer term residency or internship opportunities . I was wondering whether you could help me out. You seem to know a great deal about the art spaces and art activity in Bangalore.
    thanks

  3. Pictures are very beautiful and rare. Thanks for sharing. Living true to its cosmopolitan image, Bengaluru (Bangalore), has something for everyone on its platter. It has slowly and gradually evolved from being a "Garden City" to the "Silicon Valley of India". Check out Water World Bangalore, a popular amusement park in Bangalore, visit for a fun filled family outing.
